In the Money is the second part of William Carlos Williams's famous trilogy about an immigrant couple, Gurlie and Joe Stecher. It is set in New York and Vermont during the book years before the First World War. Joe decided to bid for a government printing contract against his old employers and other established firms in New York. His battle to be allowed to open his own shop and fulfil his contract leads him to the White House and the President.
Throughout the book his wife, Gurlie, emerges as the more ambitious of the two, shrewd, calculating and, above all, with an immense love of money.
By the end of the book Joe and Girlie have achieved... a house in the suburbs.
